Eastpointe will use grant funds to improve Kelly Road, add solar lights – Macomb Daily

Eastpointe received two grants this week that will facilitate improvements to Kelly Road as well as the addition of solar street lights on several residential streets.

A $36,833 planning assistance grant from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) will be used for the Kelly Road Complete Streets Corridor Plan in coordination with neighboring Harper Woods to enhance sidewalks and make the area more pedestrian and cyclist friendly.

“This grant will be applied to complete Kelly Road between Seven Mile and 10 Mile roads to make it safer and more user friendly,” said Assistant City Manager Kim Homan. “We are going to be adding mid-walk crosswalks, stormwater infrastructure and making safer routes connecting residential and retail areas.”

Homan said there are several areas where sidewalks are inconsistent, which makes it difficult for pedestrians.

Eastpointe also received a $135,000 Community Development Block Grant from Macomb County that will be used to add solar street lights on several residential streets including Collinson, Veronica, Lincoln, Piper and Rein avenues.

“This is the second round of solar light installations,” said Homan. “We hope to add solar lights on streets throughout the city.”
