The small fire ultimately destroyed a desk and damaged the ceiling above. Thankfully, the salon's sprinkler system was functioning and the fire’s spread was minimized prior to the arrival of Redding Fire crews. The fallout, including significant water damage, will put Pro Nails (located in the Food Maxx shopping center off Churn Creek) out of business for an unknown portion of time.

Owners Julia and Joey Zizileuskas took over ‘Pro Nails' last July. They told KRCR on Monday they had to build the shop from the ground up, both in renovations and their clientele base. An emotional Julia spoke with KRCR's Sam Chimenti about the difficult situation they now find themselves in.

"We got clients, we got busy a little bit. And just before the holidays, this happens," said Julia with tears in her eyes. "I don't want the clients to leave me because of all the hard work that we do. Stay with us, please support us, and please pray for us so we can open soon."

Julia said they are currently looking at nearby empty spaces to temporarily run their business, as they await word from their insurance on the damage and repair costs. Unfortunately, Julia isn't sure if they will reopen ahead of Christmas-- a time in which business typically increases. She asks her clientele to keep in touch with her via their work phone (530-226-8180) or her cellphone (510-406-3244).

We also spoke with the Redding Fire Department about this incident at Pro Nails. Around the holidays, Redding Fire says it's common to see electrical failures and, in some cases, fires, due to more people plugging in things like Christmas lights or space heaters. The department reminds people to be cautious of overwhelming electrical outlets (i.e. power strips) inside their home or business.

"This is the perfect example of why sprinkler systems are so important because, I mean, it stopped so much property damage (inside Pro Nails). It could have affected so many people; not just their businesses, but their lives," said Sarah Roth, Fire Prevention Specialist for RFD. "Being able to have that initial response from your sprinklers, being able to hit that initial fire when it's starting, it makes a huge difference."

Esthetician Trolley Roth encourages business owners to make sure their sprinkler systems are maintained and checked once a year. She also mentioned the importance of having your home’s smoke and CO2 detectors working properly at all times.
